What time do precinct caucuses start and end? Doors open at 6:30p.m. The caucus starts at 7:00p.m. There is no exact ending time, but most caucuses only take 1-2 hours. The length depends on how many resolutions your neighbors want to discuss.
What if I can't make it on February 27? You can submit a Non-Attendee form. Send the completed form to [email protected] prior to caucus night or send it along with one of your neighbors who is attending caucuses.
What are precinct caucuses? Your precinct caucus is a meeting of neighbors that happens every two years. The precinct caucus is the first step in shaping our party and electing leaders to support our DFL values. The agenda includes: electing a precinct chair and two vice chairs, electing delegates and alternates to the Senate District DFL Convention, and proposing and voting on resolutions that can become part of the DFL party platform. Precinct caucuses are the most basic, grass-roots level of politics.
What is a precinct? A precinct is the smallest political organizing unit and is basically your neighborhood. Each precinct has its own voting location. Find out what precinct you're in and confirm your caucus location before you arrive by checking the Precinct/Caucus Finder.
What do precinct chairs and vice chairs do? Precinct officers are the face of the DFL Party at its most grass roots level, which is the precinct. The position is really what you make of it, but here's a Precinct Officer Job Description for some ideas of what a precinct officer can do.
What are resolutions? Resolutions are policy statements on a particular issue. Attendees draft and bring resolutions to caucus, where they debate and vote on whether to pass resolutions along to the Senate District convention. If the resolution makes it all the way to the DFL State Convention, it could become part of the DFL Ongoing Platform or Action Agenda. Resolutions need to be written on or at least attached to the official Resolution Form in order to be considered. We will also have copies of the form at the caucuses. Can I bring my kids to precinct caucuses? Sure! Your kids are welcome to attend with you. Unless your kids enjoy politics, however, you will want to bring something to keep them entertained!
Do only Democrats hold precinct caucuses? No, all parties hold precinct caucuses on the same night but in different locations. The DFL precinct caucuses for Senate District 52 will be held at Black Hawk Middle School.
Is there a dress code at precinct caucuses? No! Wear whatever you would wear at any other gathering of neighbors.
Do I have to talk at precinct caucuses? You will probably be asked to introduce yourself. Other than that, it is up to you how much you want to participate.
Why should I come to precinct caucuses? To meet your Democratic neighbors, get involved in local politics, and have influence on the political process. Precincts will be electing one Precinct Chair and two Vice Chairs. If you have some time to give to the DFL party, consider running! Click here to read what the precinct officers do. Be the change you want to see!
Can anyone come to precinct caucuses? Sure, anyone can observe the caucus. But there are a few rules about participating. You must be 16 by election day to participate in the caucus and 18 by election day to vote on caucus business. You must consider yourself a member of the DFL party and can't be active in any other political party to participate in the caucus.
What are your rules for campaigns and community outreach organizations? Click here for the rules, which were passed by the DFL52 Central Committee on January 18, 2024.
