FAQ's
Why should I participate in the precinct caucus? To get involved in local politics and influence the political process! You can also advance to the next level of local politics, which is the Senate District Convention. Fill out the Caucus Participation Form to indicate you want to be a Senate District Convention Delegate.
Is there a Zoom or any other kind of meeting for Precinct Caucuses? No, just fill out the participation form and you're done. There is no meeting to attend on February 1. You can, however, stop in to Dakota Hills Middle School (4183 Braddock Trail, Eagan) to fill out the forms in person from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on February 1.
What are resolutions? Resolutions are policy statements on a particular issue. Usually, attendees bring resolutions on issues they feel strongly about and the caucus debates the resolution and then votes on whether to pass it along to the Senate District Convention. This year, all resolutions will be considered by the Senate District Resolutions Committee and voted on at the Senate District Convention. If the resolution makes it all the way to the DFL State Convention, it could become part of the DFL Action Agenda. Submit your resolution using the online Resolution Form. Scroll down for a link to the paper form.
How will delegates to the Senate Distict convention be selected? When you fill out the Caucus Participation Form there is a question asking if you want to be a delegate. Usually there are enough delegate slots so that anyone who indicates an interest in being a delegate will be a delegate. If there is a contest in any particular precinct, a random drawing will be held on Zoom in early February to select delegates. Notice will be given so that anyone who wants to witness the drawing can attend the Zoom meeting.
When is the Senate District Convention? We won't know what the Senate Districts will look like until redistricting maps are released sometime around February 15. After we know what Senate District everyone is in, we will let Delegates know when and where their convention will be held. Senate Districts have the option to hold their conventions virtually.
How will precinct officers be elected? Usually a Precinct Chair and two Vice Chairs are elected at each precinct caucus. This year precinct officers will be elected by the Central Committee of the new Senate District after redistricting. You can indicate your interest in being a precinct officer when you use the online Caucus Participation Form.
Can anyone register for the Precinct Caucus? You must be 16 by election day to participate in the caucus and 18 by election day to vote on caucus business. You must consider yourself a member of the DFL party and can't be active in any other political party to participate in the caucus.
